DIY Feel and Find Discovery Box

Creating a little excitement to your science lesson or nature study can be
as simple as a feel and find discovery box!

Having an extra shoe box on hand is all you need to create a tool to use again and again.  We used
 ours to choose distinctions between leaves and to figure out which object was a rock and
 which one was a plant bulb.

Crockett demonstrates how you or your older child can assemble the box.  First, you cut one side of the box to use as a flap.  Next, use another piece of cardboard to make two separate sides.  Then, if you want to make a title page, cut down and tape a sheet protector to the lid of the shoe box.  Using a piece of paper, cut it to fit and write your title, then slip it into the protector.  You can create smaller papers with instructions on different assignments and slip them in.  This would be a great project to use in a co-op class and change what they are feeling with every few students.

Cowboy became the tester of the box.  A friend showed us a bulb that falls off a bush
down in our yard.  I really thought they were rocks and had no idea it was a bulb.  We gathered
a few, and some were poking out a new shoot.  It was from a Crimini plant or spider plant.  I will
definitely be planting them to create some new bushes.The boys were not with us when we made this discovery, so I thought I would put them to the test.
I found a similar size rock in the yard, and it surprisingly seemed the same weight as the bulb.
This was the perfect object to test our new feel and find box.

He was not quite sure which was which, so he had to examine them up close.
He chose the correct one and was fascinated that it was really a seed for a plant.
Crockett wanted to try other things, he thought the box was fun. It is always good
to find new activities to keep them busy learning new things!
