Experience life as a pioneer in the Florida cracker days and compare them with life on the prairie of Wisconsin. Each week we will work and play as Laura Ingalls Wilder did and those rugged families who braved the frontiers of Florida during the same time period. How was it alike and how was it different?
In class, I will alternate reading an excerpt from one of three books, Little House in the Big Woods, A Land Remembered, and Brave the Wild Trail.
We will learn how each family gathered food, built homes and survived the frontier life. We may chop wood, whittle, make toys, cook, wash clothes and learn about the wildlife of long ago through games and tracking.
Parents are welcome to stay on the premises or leave for some quiet time. If your child is younger than 9 we request you stay.
Class includes all supplies and materials, PDF of Holly’s book Prairie Life, student’s admission to Debary Hall historic site on last class day. Parents need to pay for their own ticket of $5.
We recommend carrying the learning through at home by reading a few chapters a week during those 4 weeks. Books we will be using are Little House in the Big Woods (all age levels), Brave the Wild Trail (ages 8-12 if reading alone) and A Land Remembered student edition volume 1 (Ages 12 and up).
Purchase one ticket for each child this is recommended for 6 and up. We will be using hammers and nails along with wood burners and saws, building a fire, cooking outside and walking in brush and by water.
This class is limited to 12 children for personal experience. There must be 5 participants to hold the class. We reserve the right to cancel the class and refund your payment.
There will be no refunds if you cancel after the RSVP cut off due to supply expenses. Cut off is October 21.
