Life in a Pond

Exploring a pond habitat will reveal many things. It is made up of pond plants, pond creatures, and the water that sustains it. Food chains and ecology play an important role in the health of the pond.

Take a trip to a nearby pond to complete this lesson and take along a habitat to bring samples home to go further with the study. A field guide to pond life may be helpful.

  • Take photographs for drawings of three pond plants. They can be growing in the water or on the water’s edge.
  • Gather some water samples to see if you can collect aquatic creatures such as brine shrimp, Caddis Fly Larva, Pond Skaters, or whirligig beetles.
  • Observe any birds or wildlife that take part in the life of the pond.
