Gardening can bring such pleasure to all ages. If it is new to you remember to start small. A pot can grow many things and produce enough to get you hooked. In this lesson, I share a few tips with you when trouble strikes and show you how our garden is going along.
Our season can be cut short due to heat and summer rains. This year that is what is happening to our side yard garden. We were able to harvest some green beans, lots of cucumbers and jalapenos. Our pots produced eggplant and cherry tomatoes.
Around mid-July, I had to go ahead and take up all the remaining plants in the side garden except for the strawberries and the jalapenos. We have had an abundance of rain where nothing has a chance to dry out or get needed sun. This can be disappointing to children as well as adults.
The cucumbers were infested with pickle worms. They were too far gone for me to be effective in remedying the problem so I had to get rid of the whole vine. We had about ten cucumbers before we lost the crop.
I shared about my trick to try and help the plants along. I used eggshell and Epsom salt. Ideally, you would want to put those in the grown when you plant, however, when trouble strikes it can boost needed minerals in your garden.

Gardening isn’t always completely successful. I love the learning experience. Each season brings new excitement and new challenges. Together as a family, we keep an eye on growth and pests by planting in foot traffic areas of our yard. Keeping backyard chickens can help keep pests at bay too, however, you can’t let them free range in your garden. They like tomatoes too. Actually, it was Tallulla who ended the cherry tomato plant. I caught her hiding behind it eating them all!
