Picking Blueberries

This activity is all about picking fruit or vegetables at a u-pick farm. The lesson ideas can be adapted to a farmer’s market or grocery store if picking is not in season in your area right now.

We visited Sandhill Blueberry farm and learned more about blueberries. This farm grows four types of berries. Farms must grow at least two types of berries for pollination to occur. This farm does a trade with a local apiary. They have their bees in her farm and she sells their honey for them. This goes into a whole other lesson on enterprise and industry.

In the video, you will see how Melanie visits with each of her customers and outfits them with a harness to hold their buckets. This is the best method of picking I have encountered. Hands-free picking!

Cedar waxwing birds are a migratory predator to blueberry farms. They swarm the fields daily and eat over thirty percent of the berries. We confirmed this with another farm as well. There is a little footage of their swarm.

Grayson shares how living math can play a part in your farm visit. Counting, multiplication, weights and much more can be a living lesson while on a farm adventure. We met up with families who had pickers from 2 years old on up. This lesson never gets old.

Print out the buckets of blueberries activity sheet to use on the farm or when you get home.  Don’t forget to interview the owners of any farm you visit. This can make the trip even better by learning their farm practices and why they chose this profession.
