Planting and Growth

Now that the seeds have grown it is time to plant them in the ground. Make sure you have a few items with you when it is time to plant.

  • trowel or small shovel
  • extra soil if necessary
  • clippers
  • twine
  • spray bottle with soapy water
  • something to dispose of weeds
  • gloves if necessary

Allowing children to get their hands dirty provides ownership of the project. Not only does it provide excellent sensory input from digging in the dirt, studies show that microbes in dirt keep your kids healthy!

Document the growth of your seeds by photographs or let the kids keep a garden journal. Let them draw each stage, describe it or glue photographs inside. This will make an excellent addition to your educational portfolio.

Gardening can sometimes be hit or miss depending on the amount of sun, pests and your soil. Don’t let this stop you from the fun and educational experience gardening can provide. Character can be developed in the garden.

  • patience
  • perseverance
  • obedience
  • caring for something other than oneself

The video ends at about 5-6 weeks into our spring garden. The next lesson will be the harvest. Will we have a bounty or will pests and too much rain wash out the crops? Stay tuned.
