Strawberry Harvest 3

The first step in the canning class is to chop the strawberries. The class brings 2 pounds of strawberries washed and green stems cut off.

Using knives is great for all ages. This works on their fine motor skills which is important during many stages of growth. A class setting allows you to work right beside your child without the distractions at home to really help them learn how to handle a knife.

Children gain confidence and begin to enjoy helping with the cooking duties. It gives them a purpose in the home to help with meals.

Setting up for a group class takes a little bit of practice but can be very successful. I make groups ahead of time and gather everything they need on a tray.

  • Mixing bowls
  • stockpot
  • funnel
  • spatulas
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • pectin and lemon
  • anything else they may need.

Cutting boards should be placed so all children can access them. Have families bring a cutting board if you don’t have enough. Asking families to bring items is another way for everyone to take ownership of the process.

The more you cut your strawberries, the less you will have to use a masher. An immersion blender will do the trick too!
