Wildflower Watch Introduction

Wildflower Watch is an expanded unit based on a portion of chapter 2 of Blaze New Trails and the Student Companion. This six-week unit is formatted for a once-a-week lesson.

It is structured in this manner to allow time to plant flower seeds and observe growth to complete the lessons. As always, adjust the time to fit your schedule. To make the most of this unit, prior preparation is encouraged. Gather books and supplies before beginning.

The book list below is recommended for the lessons in this unit. The local library may have copies. If not, consider an inter-library loan or ask a friend if he or she has a copy for borrowing. Substitute titles may be used.

Lesson One – Miss Ladybird’s Wildflowers – Kathi Appelt

Lesson Two – Miss Rumphius – Barbara Cooney

Lesson Three – The Flower Hunter – Deborah Kogan Ray

Lesson Four – How Flowers Grow – Emma Helbrough

Lesson Five – A Weed is a Flower, The Life of George Washington Carver – Aliki

Lesson Six – Wildflowers, Blooms, and Blossoms – Diane Burns

Supplies:

  • flower seeds of your choice. Sunflowers and purple coneflowers grow easy and produce beautiful blooms.
  • a flower bed or a large flower pot.
  • potting soil
  • watercolor paper
  • one brad for each student for the wheel on the lapbook page
  • Piece of plain paper on which to glue lapbook pieces

Worksheet pages to download will be in the resource section of each lesson.

Beyond the Trail, activities are included in the unit to extend learning into other content areas and allow children to dig deeper into the subject.

Several times throughout the unit students are asked to pick flowers. Observe any rules for flower picking posted in the areas you may visit.
