Making Jewelry with Little House on the Prairie

Making jewelry as a handicraft goes well with a literature study. The Little House on the Prairie Series is one of my favorites and we are on our second go around reading them in our home.  I included many handicrafts to choose from in my unit study, Prairie Life. It follows the first book in the series, Little House in the Big Woods. I created these jewelry pieces to wear at homeschool conventions I was speaking at. Everyone loved them, so I wanted to share how I made them with you.

This is a wonderful activity to do with the book or any in the series. Gather together with several children to do as a keepsake craft or make a jewelry kit to give as gifts along with a book.

Supplies

Supplies you will need:

• necklace, I have used a silver link and a suede ribbon
• pendant type charm that is blank in the middle
• reduced size copy of book cover of your choice, depending on the size of the pendant it will need to be about 1 inch by 1.5 inches
• add-ons: buttons, wagon charm, lace, fabric strips, beads and jump rings
• Dimensional Magic
• Mod Podge
• small paintbrush

The Charm

1. Glue the paper copy of the book to the center of the pendant.  Mod Podge goes a long way. Put a little on the back of the paper to hold it in place on the pendant.
2. Brush Mod Podge over the top of the paper book cover. Brush away any excess.
3. Let the pendant dry overnight. This is important because the paper book cover may darken or discolor if you add the dimensional magic before the Mod Podge is completely dry.
4. Once the pendant is dry, drop Dimensional Magic onto the pendant. Cover the surface but don’t leave any bubbles.
5. Let the pendant dry overnight.
6. Add jump rings to any charms, beads or buttons you want to a put on the necklace.
7. If you are using a string or ribbon type of necklace, just slide everything on in the order you would like it.
8. If you are using a link type of necklace, slide on the pendant and choose which links you want to add the charms. Tie on small strips of lace, fabric or ribbon.
9. You have a one of a kind necklace straight off the prairie!

The Little House literature series is one of my all-time favorites. It was great fun creating these jewelry pieces and I hope you can find a delightful way to enjoy making them with your children.
